Historical musicals are all the rage, and 1776 followed that trend with a hit revival run on Broadway at the American Airlines Theatre. The show’s success has led to the announcement of a national tour, with 1776 set to hit 14 cities across the US this spring and summer. Those shows start with a pair of dates at Stanley performing Arts Center in Utica, New York, before the musical hits venues in cities such as Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, and San Diego. The final stop announced to date is at the Starlight Theatre in Kansas City, Mo, from July 25 through July 30.

1776 has been around for a long time. The musical was first performed in 1969 and was inspired partly by Dearest Enemy, a Rogers and Hart musical written in 1925. The musical saw a film release in 1972 and then a first Broadway revival in 1997. This revival – initially planned for 2020 but delayed until 2022 because of the COVID-19 pandemic – is piggybacking on the mega success of Hamilton.
To that end, the cast is a diverse mix, with female, non-binary, and trans performers in the Founding Fathers’ roles and their associates’ roles. Less of a historical tract and more of a warm, funny, and moving piece of theater, 1776 is well worth a watch if it travels to your region in 2023.
