The Washington Commanders finished bottom of the NFC East in 2022. While that sounds bad, the Commanders were in a tough spot, propping up the division even though they didn’t have a losing record. That is the type of problem you run into when you have the NFC Champions, Philadelphia Eagles, winning 14 games, and the Dallas Cowboys (12 wins) and New York Giants (nine wins) being playoff-bound franchises.
The Commanders’ home schedule in 2023 is a mixture of games they should win – the Arizona Cardinals (September 10) and Chicago Bears (October 5) – along with tough-looking inter-conference games against the Buffalo Bills (September 24) and Miami Dolphins (December 3). Add in the three games against tough NFC East competition, and this will be a season of highs and lows at FedexField.

Does Eric Bieniemy unleash Sam Howell?
The NFL is a quarterback-driven league. The Washington Commanders hope they have their guy in second-year quarterback Sam Howell, and they hope they have given him the tools to succeed with an exciting offensive coordinator hire. Eric Bieniemy has been in the Kansas City Chiefs system under Andy Reid since 2013. First as running backs coach, then as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, Bieniemy has soaked in the genius of Reid and was a huge part of turning Patrick Mahomes into the best player in the entire league.
Bieniemy is a scheme match for Howell. Expect more RPO concepts and misdirection than the Commanders have ever run before. If it works, Howell has the supporting class to take this team to the playoffs. If it fails, the Commanders will get to pick near the top of the 2024 NFL Draft and perhaps find their future quarterback there.
