Can Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving combine to make the Mavs better?
The big question coming into the 2023-24 season is if star players Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving will be better over an entire season than they were as a pair after the Mavs traded for Kyrie in the middle of their last campaign. Thrown together in a rush, the Mavs faded late and missed the playoffs as their star duo went 8-12 when both were in the starting lineup. An entire offseason of work is precisely what Irving and Doncic need, with the pair of All-Stars certainly more than good enough to power Dallas back to the playoffs, even in a loaded Western Conference.
After only tanking at the end of the year to protect a first-round pick from a 2019 trade, the Mavs are all in this season 2023-24. They have two years to assess how this combo works together, and the 3-0 star shows that early signs are good. Doncic is averaging a silly 39 points per game, with Irving adding another 20. If they both can stay healthy, this is a team to watch this winter.
