Bruins Snap Losing Streak In Style

This win is a bigger one than it might appear initially. The Bruins had lost three on the bounce, with those three games coming against good opponents over the course of four nights. With the All-Star Break looming, a win was vital to reset the franchise’s trajectory for when play resumes. This mini-slump was the Bruins first losing streak of the season, with every other defeat they have suffered immediately followed by a win.

That ability to win – and that strength of character – allowed the Bruins to not get too down during the slump. When you don’t lose consecutive games until late January, something is going right. All Boston had to do was refind that form, that scoring edge, which is something they did masterfully against the Leafs.

Records Ahead?

Boston’s 39 wins in 51 games mean they are on pace to win 63 games this season. That has never been done before, with the Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning finishing with 62 wins in 1995-96 and 2018-19, respectively. One interesting note is that neither of those teams even made it to the Stanley Cup Finals, let alone win the trophy. The Lightning was particularly disappointing in the playoffs, with the Columbus Blue Jackets sweeping them in the first round.

This Bruins team isn’t supposed to be this good. They are working with a new head coach for this season – Jim Montgomery replaced Bruce Cassidy in the summer – and they were ranked 14th in ESPN’s power rankings. Odds of 25-1 were given by Caesars before the season started for the Bruins to win the Stanley Cup, odds that luck crazy when you consider how good they have been over the first half of the season.

They have the pieces – wing David Pasrnak and goalie Linus Ullmark are both having sensational seasons – and no one would bet against the Boston Bruins running through the playoff after putting together the best first half of a season in recent memory.
