With all due respect to Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen, the 2022 NFL MVP award must go to Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. While Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs lead the league in passing yards and passing touchdowns, and while Allen continues to be dominant for the Buffalo Bills, Hurts is on his own this season in digging into his immense set of skills to will his team to victory week after week, no matter how he must do so.
Hurts Versatility
Hurts does so many things – and so many things well – that it is easy to go straight to his versatility as being the biggest key to the Eagles’ league leading 11-1 record. He ran all over the Green Bay Packers in a game where he set countless Eagles’ records with his legs on week, before turning around and throwing the ball all over the Tennessee Titans in a 35-10 win the very next time out.
It is worth noting that the ‘V’ in MVP stands for valuable. Hurts’ value to the Eagles is astonishing. If he wasn’t at the quarterback position, then there is no way that this squad would be 11-1. Heck, they might not even have a winning record. The MVP award at its core shouldn’t just go to the very best player in the league – Mahomes may well win based on that because his numbers are wild on a Chiefs’ team that loves to air out the ball – but it should go to the guy that means the most to his team. That guy is Jalen Hurts.
Hurts is playing the game in slow motion right now. He can discern quickly in a game how he needs to attack a defense – be it through the air, on the ground, or a mixture of both – and he is able to execute as needed. His efficiency is outstanding – he has tossed just one pick since Week 5 – and he isn’t making mistakes and putting the ball up for grabs. Having A.J. Brown in the lineup certainly helps, but there are plenty of top tier wide receivers in the league that have no chemistry with tier quarterback. Hurts and Brown were on the same page since day one, yet another feather in Hurts cap as a teammate and leader of this Eagles’ team.
The Eagles are one of the Super Bowl favorites and their MVP candidate at quarterback is the main reason why.
