D.C. United is one of the most successful clubs in MLS history. The Black & Red have an impressive four MLS Cups to their name, along with other silverware from domestic and international competitions. In 2023, you need to catch a D.C. United game as the club is now managed by the incomparable Wayne Rooney. There are a number of games on the schedule to target, with rivalry matches against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, August 28, and against New York Red Bulls on Saturday, September 23, right at the top of that list.
Here is the biggest question for DC United based on their start to the 2023 season.
Is Wayne Rooney the right coach for D.C. United?
Wayne Rooney almost performed a miracle when he was head coach of Derby County in the English Championship. The Rams have deducted points on several occasions and had a playing roster so thin that the kit man was next man up at one point to get out on the pitch. Debry was eventually relegated, but the stint did Rooney wonders in terms of his reputation as a coach able to thrive in difficult situations.
The situation isn’t quite as bad in Washington, D.C. – the lack of relegation sees to that – but the club is not what it once was. A quick look at the MLS standings shows that United are 13th out of fifteen teams in the Eastern Conference, a poor showing from a club with their history. The roster and organization have been described as a “Dumpster Fire” by ex-USMNT player Hercules Gomez, so it will be fascinating to see what Rooney can do in this role.
