The 2022 season was rough for the Arizona Cardinals. They started out looking solid, putting up a 2-2 record after four games. That was easily their best stretch of the year, winning just two more games the rest of the way and finishing 4-13. The result was a head coaching change, with the overmatch Kliff Kingsbury out and former Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon in. Gannon will have to work out how to get the best out of incumbent quarterback Kyler Murray, a player the Cards have invested their future into but is recovering from a season-ending ACL tear.
The first chance Gannon will have to impress home fans is on Sunday, September 17, when the Cards host the New York Giants. Tickets on Immortal Seats for that game are just $70, showing fans’ general apathy and their opinion of how the Cardinals will be in 2023. Other games of interest this fall include clashes against a pair of AFC North teams, with the Cincinnati Bengals (October 8) and Baltimore Ravens (October 29) both visiting Glendale. When does Murray return from his ACL tear?
Murray went down in Week 12 last season with an injury that typically takes at least a year to recover fully. His size and style of play always led to questions about his durability, but if you take Murray’s feet away from the game plan, it is hard to see what he brings to the table. Murray will push to come back as soon as possible, and the noises coming out of the Cardinals facility over the winter and spring have been that progress is being made swiftly. Even so, a Week 1 return seems unlikely, and if the Cards are already out of the playoff chase in Week 8 or Week 9 when he can return, is there any point risking a player that the previous regime was building the franchise around?
I wouldn’t expect to see Murray in any meaningful way this season, and that means one of Colt McCoy, David Blough, Cayton Tune, or Jeff Driskel will be the week one starter. It feels like it will be a long season in the desert.
