The 2023 Chicago Bears won’t have to do much to improve on their 2022 season. The Bears were 2-1 after Week 3, but the wheels fell off. They won just once the rest of the way as they defeated the Patriots in New England in Week 7, finishing on a 10-game losing streak and ending the season with a miserable 3-14 record.
The Bears have the player they believe to be their quarterback of the future in Justin Fields. That is why they traded out of the 2023 No. 1 overall pick for more draft capital. Fans are clearly ready. Do the Bears trust Justin Fields?
This might seem like a weird question seeing as the Bears are in Year 2 of the Justin Fields era, and they seemingly committed to the former Ohio State star by their draft dealings this spring. That said, the Bears clearly didn’t trust Fields last season when the team attempted just 377 passes on the year, the fewest amount of passes by a team since the 2004 Pittsburgh Steelers (and the 17-game season meant the Bears had an extra contest to build those passing stats.)
Fields now has a legit No. 1 wide receiver in the trade to took D.J. Moore from Carolina to Chicago. Fields has to get better at reading NFL-level defenses and getting the ball out quicker. His hesitations last year were a huge part of the Bears’ struggles, and while he is the fixture for now, it is notable that the Bears’ draft trades have loaded them with the ability to make a run at a top quarterback in the 2024 draft class should Fields struggle again this fall.
