The Dallas Cowboys were in the running to be the NFC East champions and the No. 1 seed in the entire conference all they through to a surprising loss to the Jacksonville Jaguar in Week 16 and a more explainable loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 17 last season. Even so, the ‘Boys finished with a stellar 12-5 record that saw them head into the NFC playoffs as the fifth seed in the conference, the highest wild card spot. The Cowboys even won their Wold Card Round game, thumping the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Floridas before falling to the San Francisco 49ers 19-12 in a disappointing Divisional Round loss.
The Cowboys start their 2023 home slate with a matchup against Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets on Saturday, September 17. Their first divisional game is against the New York Giants on November 12, and they then host the Washington Commanders in Arlington in their traditional Thanksgiving Day slot. Are there more questions than answers on offense?
Dak Prescott remains weirdly polarizing, but the Cowboys at least know what they have with the longest-tenured current starting quarterback in the NFL. The rest of the offense is where the question lies. CeeDee Lamb is an elite wide receiver, but there must to be questions about Brandin Cooks and Michael Gallup. Cooks had a down year in 2022 (albeit with bad quarterback play) and is on the backside of his career, while Gallup never seemed to be 100% healthy last season after coming into the year with an injury. There is one proven commodity here and two reasonable-sized question marks.
The running back room is a question too. Moving on from Zeke was expected and needed with the contract size he wanted. Tony Pollard looked great as a guy spelling the former Dallas starter, but how he adapts to the role of lead back and who is his deputy is very much up in the air. Even the tight end group has questions. The three players have huge upside – especially second-rounder Luke Schoonmaker – but they have a total of 30 NFL targets between them. If things roll right, the Boys are good for double-digit wins. If not, then the floor is low.
