Will the Timbers rise now they are focusing on the league?
A good U.S. Open Cup run is always a goal for teams in MLS. The Timbers would like to have progressed beyond the Round of 32 this season, but that is as far as they got after being dumbed out 4-3 this week by Real Salt Lake. While it was a disappointing result, it is one that can help the Timbers in the long run over the course of the 2023 MLS season.
There is a logjam in the middle of the Western Conference. FC Dallas in fifth and Austin FC in twelfth are separated by just five points. The Timbers are in the middle of that, sitting ninth with 12 points. Now they are out of the cup, the league will become the focus. That should see them move up the standings over the coming weeks.
