The video below looks back at the most important home run of Leyritz’s career.
Jim Leyritz’s overall statistics do not properly portray his MLB career. Playing catcher for six teams (one twice) would suggest he was little more than a journeyman. Instead, Leyritz was a two-time World Series champion with the New York Yankees. More than that, Leyritz arguably kickstarted the Yankees’ dominance in the late 1990s and early 2000s with the home run above.
In Game 4 of the 1996 World Series, the Yankees were 6-3 down in the 8th inning against one of the best closers in the sport. Leyritz hit a three-run bomb off of Mark Whoilers, tying the game before the Yankees eventually won the trophy. This was their first title since 1978, while they would then win three more from 1998 to 2000. Leyritz was also part of that 1999 win after a mid-season trade.
