What is Six – The Musical?

There has been plenty of noise about Six – The Musical since it began its current Broadway run at the Lena Horne Theatre. Some of this is because the musical was scheduled to open on 12 March 2020, the day Broadway Theatres were closed en masse due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Its delayed opening was in October 2021, when Six – The Musical became the first new show to open on Broadway post-pandemic.

The run continues at the Lena Horne Theatre, but a pair of concurrent touring units – Aragon and Boleyn – are hitting theatres around North America this year. Spots to see this show include the San Diego Civic Theatre in July, Connor Palace Theatre in Cleveland throughout August, and the Buell Theatre in Denver this December.

This is a musical with an interesting premise. It is a modern retelling of the wives of King Henry VIII, written as a musical comedy in the form of a pop concert. Each wife takes a turn telling her personal story, each one-upping the other as they see who suffered the most at the hands of a king that wasn’t exactly known for his tolerance of women. A Tony Award winner for its Best Original Score, Six – The Musical takes a bizarre concept and has turned it into a must-see musical thanks to witty writing, outstanding vocal performances, and the novelty of the piece.
