Wicked

2023 Wicked Tour

When the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West was adapted into a 2003 musical, its co-creators could not have dreamed of the success it has been. Winnie Holzman (book) and Stephen Schwartz (music and lyrics) combined to create a show that has passed the $1 billion mark in total Broadway revenue and trails (as of the beginning of 2023) onlyThe Lion King as Broadway’s second highest-grossing musical of all time.

The musical has legions of fans and, along with the Broadway shows at the Gershwin Theatre in New York, there is a touring production that spends up to a month in various North American cities before moving on to the next venue. Stops already planned for 2023 include the current location of the Opera House in Washington DC, with future shows scheduled for cities like Orlando, Miami, Atlanta, St. Louis, and Houston (there is a complete list at the end of this blog.)

Wicked focuses on the land of Oz, created by L. Frank Baum in his 1900 children’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The difference is that this take on the tale investigates the world from a different perspective, that of two witches who turn an initial rivalry into a friendship. There are twists and turns along the way that have seen the show lauded as “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” by the New York Times and as “A cultural Phenomenon” by Variety magazine.

It is a musical that everyone should see at least once, with some songs living with you for weeks and months after the performance. It is easy to forget that the core themes of the production are people’s perceptions of what is good and what is evil when you hear that fantastic “Defying Gravity” being belted out by Glinda. This is a bucket list musical, and, given the length of time that the tour stays in each city, it is one that you need to catch as you have no idea how long it will be until the cast makes a return stop.
