Sometimes, the NFL gets its primetime game selections dead right. That is how it is in Week 14 of the 2023 NFL season, with the Sunday Night Football matchup of NFC East rivals seeing the 10-2 Philadelphia Eagles traveling to Arlington, Texas, to take on the 9-3 Dallas Cowboys. This wasn’t a game that had to be flexed into this timeslot, but a game that looked important when the schedule first came out and has only become more critical through 12 games for each team.
These two are still well in the race for the top seed in the NFC. The Eagles were blown out at home in Week 13 by the San Francisco 49ers in a result that has thrown open both the NFC East and the path to that all-important No. 1 seed and the home-field advantage through the playoffs that it guarantees. The 49ers’ win provided a path not only for the Cowboys to run down the Eagles, but also for the 49ers (and the Detroit Lions) to win enough games to be the best team in the NFC.
This is a must-win game for Dallas if they want the playoffs to run through AT&T Stadium. The Eagles won the reverse game in Philly 28-23, so a Dallas win evens the head-to-head tiebreaker. Based on the NFC East record, that win would put the Cowboys ahead of the Eagles. At the same time, a loss would essentially give the Eagles a basically unassailable three-game lead over their hated rival with tiebreakers involved.
