The NFL season is drawing ever closer. That means it is time to start evaluating potential winners of Super Bowl 59, which will be held on Sunday, February 9, at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. Remember, you can get great deals on the Super Bowl and all other NFL games through Immortal Seats.
Here are three contenders and three pretenders to the 2025 NFL crown.
Contender: Kansas City Chiefs
The two-time defending Super Bowl Champions are chasing history. No team has ever won three Lombardis on the bounce, but there is no reason to think that the Chiefs will disappear from the upper level of the NFL, a place they have been for over half a decade at this point. Patrick Mahomes will be the best quarterback in the league again, while in first-round draft pick Xavier Worth (WR, Texas), they have a player many think could fill the void that Tyreek Hill left when he departed Arrowhead Stadium in 2022
Pretender: New York Jets
We will have to see it to believe it with the Jets. In a perfect world, Aaron Rodgers returns in his NFL MVP form of 2021, completely recovered from an injury that has ended many careers. The upside is here for sure: the defensive line is the deepest in the league regarding talent, and the Jets almost beat the Chiefs last season with Zach Wilson under center. Even so, how can you trust that the team with the longest playoff drought in the Big 4 sports is as ready for primetime as the TV execs would have you believe?
Contender: Detroit Lions
I like the noises coming out of Detroit. This young, hungry group of players has latched onto the hype that came with their success last year and looks determined to take things to the net level. Their NFC Championship game defeat to the San Francisco 49ers has galvanized them, while their draft did nothing but add more promising talent. The question mark is on their quarterback, but if Jared Goff can deliver, then the Lions are my NFL favorites.
Pretender: Cincinnati Bengals
I will not label Jue Burrow as a bust, but some think the Bengals quarterback has reached his ceiling. Last season was a write-off for the Brngals, with Burrow getting hurt early, often, and then for the season (in October). Burrow should be fully healed, and Ja’Marr Chase is a monster, but can this team get over the hump, given their brutal division that wears down all its teams over the course of the regular season?
Contender: San Fransico 49ers
Any team with Christian McCaffrey will be a threat to go deep into the NFL winter. The 49ers are another team that has been at the top of the pile for a minute, and their roster is the equal of any team in the league. Brock Purdy is a quarterback moving from stunning to established, and they would love another shot at the Chiefs in February.
Pretender: Dallas Cowboys
I mean, who else could it be?
